The novel was first published in two parts, with Part One in 1605 and Part Two in 1615.

The story follows the adventures of a man named Alonso Quixano who becomes obsessed with reading chivalric romances. Consumed by his reading, he loses his sanity and decides to become a knight-errant, taking on the name Don Quixote. He sets out on his adventures with his loyal squire, Sancho Panza, and encounters a series of humorous and often absurd situations.
